This is a fun scene for two female actors. 'Don't sweat the small stuff' is such an appropriate by-line for Kayla and for this scene, when you consider that comedy is all about just that; making the little things really matter. Comedy equals drama plus time. This scene gives the actors opportunity to explore the conventions of comic timing while finding the emotional truth of situation, relationship and character. The office setting and the way each character manages her space tell us so much about their different personalities. The writer sets up their territorial differences from the 'get go'. One is apparently efficient and tidy with a motto subscribing to perseverance and the other messy and disorganised with a motto reflecting a very easy going outlook on life. Is this the classic odd couple at work? Their relationship is clearly a tense one - although one imagines that Kayla would do her best not to let Lucy under her skin. How uptight and efficient is Lucy? How easy going and laid back is Kayla? The actors will have great fun exploring these differences, finding how far they can go while still serving the story and the comic truth of the scene. Emotionally Lucy seems to hold Kayla in a place of contempt - what she stands for and what she does is just not good enough. We don't meet Kayla on an ordinary day - if there is such a thing - today we meet Kayla in a highly emotional state. She works hard to suppress it but to no avail. |
