Actors performing this scene will need to build a strong back-story for their characters, and their relationship. Whatever transpired between them that caused so much hurt is only inferred and we must draw our own conclusions. This immediately requires actors to secure a strong and deeply felt inner life. It is imperative that both actors run their character's inner monologue. If there past is built through a series of improvisations this will give the actors solid images and experience from which to draw. Kathy feels resentment, bitterness, outrage, hurt, indignation and more. Alison feels regretful and apologetic and at times she appears a little unaware of the depth of Kathy's feelings. What sort of character is Alison? How has she behaved? What went down that involved Mike? Has she been unthinking and simply did not see the potential consequences of her actions? Or is she more manipulative and only now regrets the past? Kathy wants nothing to do with Alison. How deep does Kathy's anger and outrage run? Was she totally betrayed? Has she placed her trust in Alison and possibly acted against her own intuition? All these questions are open to be discovered through the rehearsal process. It will be interesting to see what back-story elements are built for the actors to use in the scene. The setting requires the actors to consider the implications of the private moment in the public space and at which point if at all the public space impinges in any way on their behaviour. Considering details such as where each character is going and where they have both just come from will also add subtlety and depth to their interaction. |
